Police arrested a pharmacist of Sonatala upazila health complex under the district after locals held him for allegedly stealing medicines and gloves from his workplace on Wednesday afternoon.
The accused — Year Uddin, 45, hailing from Tanore upazila in Rajshahi district, has been serving Sonatola Upazila Health Complex as a pharmacist for the last 10 years, sources said.
As he reached Sonatola bus stand area on his way to his rented residence at Baluarhat in Sonatola upazila on Wednesday afternoon, a few locals searched his bag out of suspicion and found some medicines and around 50 gloves belonging to the health complex, said police and witnesses.
Informed, local police produced him to a mobile court that ordered filing a regular case against him.
Later searching his house, the law enforcers seized more medicines meant for patients of the government-run health complex, police said.
Contacted, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Uttam Kumar Mondal, also executive magistrate, said, “Some medicines and gloves were found in Year Uddin’s bag and the mobile court suggested police to file a regular case against him.”
Mizanur Rahman, office assistant of the hospital, filed a theft case against the pharmacist on Wednesday night, said Md Khalequzzaman, officer in charge (OC) of Sonatola police station.
He will be produced before the court with a prayer for his remand for inquiry, said the OC.
“We are astonished at the alleged evil act of the pharmacist. High officials have been informed of the matter,” said Dr Hosna Feroja, upazila health and family planning officer of Sonatola.
